Icelandic Textile Center

I meant to write regular blog posts during my stay but I was very busy (and having fun!) so I completely ignored my computer. The Textile Center has several studios: weaving studio, main studio, dye studio, and the textile lab.

The weaving studio is full of looms. There are 9 countermarch looms, a tapestry loom, and a single 24″ rigid heddle loom. There is also two knitting machines and a giant size warping mill.

The main studio has an XL Louet drum carder, an Ashford spinning wheel, iron & ironing board, several desks and a large, long work table. There are miscellaneous supplies left by past residents – yarn, thread, fabric. And there are two sewing machines.

The dye studio is in a detached building across the parking lot. There are two burners, many pots and containers, and some leftover supplies.

My favorite was the textile lab. It’s located on the main floor of a business building a short walk down the street. There are 2 TC2 looms, a laser cutter, vinyl cutter, felt loom, overlock (serger) machine, and an embroidery machine.

I used all of the studios. I wove 3 varafeldurs in the weaving studio, I dyed mini wool skeins and swatches in the dye studio, I carded wool fleece and wove with the rigid heddle loom in the main studio, and in the textile lab I made sheets of felted fabric and embroidered patches on the embroidery machine. I’ll share my projects in a separate post.
