Traveling to Iceland

Mister and I went to Iceland December 2014 and had a wonderful time. We booked our trip through Iceland Unlimited – they arranged everything and provided a self-guided tour itinerary. It fit the way we like to travel, without the added bonus of someone else arranging all the hotels, flights, car rentals, etc. We drove to waterfalls and hot springs, went snowmobiling, and even tried dog sledding. We spent several nights outside taking pictures of the aurora borealis, both in the south and also the north, in Akureyri.

The Icelandic Textile Center, where I will be spending the month of February 2022, is located in the very small town of Blönduós, about a 4 hour drive from Reykjavik. There is a bus company, Strætó, that offers routes all over the country. I will take Bus 57 to Blönduós. At first I thought I would figure out the bus system in Reykjavík and take a bus to downtown, where I will stay for a few days. But I will have a lot of luggage, since I have to take all of my supplies with me, and the older I get, the less I want to travel on a budget! I reached out to Iceland Unlimited and they helped arrange pickups and hotels for me. I am even treating myself with a northern lights tour. I arrive on my birthday and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate (although it would be better if Mister could be with me!).

I arrive in Iceland early in the morning, around 6 am. I will be driven to my hotel, where I will stay for three nights. I plan on finding yarn shops and thrift stores, and visiting churches and museums if they are open. It’s a crazy time to be traveling!

I will then catch the bus to Blönduós. The Textile Center is walking distance from the bus stop.

I do have one excursion I want to take while I’m there. Mister and I went to a fabulous restaurant in Akureyri, Rub23. At the time (and I hope they still do!), they sold their signature spice blends and we bought one of each. They were so delicious, and we talk about them from time to time, how we should go back to Iceland just to buy those spice blends. I plan on taking the bus (the same #57 bus) to Akureyri – about 2 hours away. I’ll stay the night, eat at Rub23 and buy ALL the spices, visit the town, and then head back to the Textile Center.

At the end of my trip, I’ll stay another 3 nights in Reykjavík. I plan on taking some tours and I’ll also try to see the northern lights.
